Now Is the Time: The Fields Are White 🌾

For a while now, we’ve been hearing the same story: “Christianity is dying in America.” But something interesting is happening. According to Pew Research, the decline seems to have hit pause. Since 2019, the number of people identifying as Christians in the U.S. has stayed steady at around 62%. And the rapid rise of the “nones”—those who say they have no religious affiliation—has also leveled off 📊.
That’s a crack of light in the darkness. 🌅
The tide of rejection has slowed, and the door we thought was closing… might actually be swinging open again 🚪.
That’s good news. Really good news.
Because it confirms what we’ve always believed deep down: the gospel still works. 🙌
It still changes lives. And the time to speak up? It’s not someday in the future.
It’s right now.
Jesus Was Fulfilled by the Mission 💬
In John 4, Jesus had just finished his life-changing conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well—a woman who, by most standards, wouldn’t have been seen as a “likely convert.” But Jesus saw something no one else did: a heart ready to receive the truth ❤️.
When the disciples came back, they urged Jesus to eat something. But he surprised them by saying:
“My meat is to do the will of Him that sent me, and to finish His work.” (John 4:34)
In other words, this is what fills me up. 🍽️ Not food, not rest—but fulfilling the mission of the Father.
And what was that mission?
To seek and save the lost. To call sinners to repentance. To bring hope to the hopeless. 💔➡️❤️
Jesus didn’t just dabble in outreach—he lived it. And it filled him up in a way physical food never could.
If we’re his followers, then his mission needs to be our mission too.
That’s where real fulfillment comes from—not from comfort, but from obedience 🙏.
Stop Waiting. Look Around. It’s Time 👀
Jesus continued, asking his disciples:
“Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest?” (John 4:35)
It’s easy to miss the tone here. This wasn’t a command. It was a challenge.
He was basically saying: “Aren’t you guys always talking about how it’s not harvest time yet?”
They’d walked through plenty of literal fields on their travels, always estimating how much longer until the crops were ready 🌽.
But Jesus was pointing to a different kind of harvest.
Some believe the woman was already on her way back to the well, bringing people from her town with her 👣.
Jesus tells them: “Lift up your eyes.” Look around. The harvest isn’t months away—it’s right now.
The fields are white. Ready. Waiting. 🌾
And that’s true for us too.
No, the people around us may not look like what we expected.
They might not fit the mold. But if they were good enough for Jesus, they’re good enough for us.
We don’t get to wait for “better timing.” ⏳
We don’t get to pick and choose who we think is worth reaching.
We’re called to reap. Now.
The Harvest Comes With Promises 🎁
Jesus gives us three truths about reaping that we still need to hear today:
🌟 1. Reapers Are Rewarded (v.36)
This isn’t just about volunteering. God is serious—he promises to reward those who get involved in the harvest.
Someday, He’s going to settle accounts—and He won’t forget a single act of faithfulness 🧾💰.
You won’t be shortchanged. You won’t be overlooked.
🌱 2. Sowers and Reapers Work Together (v.37)
Not every interaction is about “closing the deal.”
Sometimes you’re planting seeds. Sometimes you’re watering. Sometimes you’re reaping.
But every part matters.
Don’t get discouraged just because you didn’t see immediate results 🌧️🌿.
🧺 3. Sometimes You Reap What Others Have Sown (v.38)
The disciples saw people coming to Christ that day, but it was the woman’s testimony that had paved the way.
We don’t always get to see the whole journey—but we’re still part of the process. And that should encourage us 💪.
Why This Matters Right Now ⏰
We’re at a pivotal moment.
Years—even decades—of faithful ministry from Boomers and Gen X believers have laid the groundwork.
They poured into kids’ ministries, VBS, Awana, youth group… and now we’re seeing fruit among Millennials and Gen Z 🧒👧🎓.
This isn’t the time to check out.
It’s the time to show up.
It’s the time to get in the field and start harvesting 🌾.
“Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” – Galatians 6:9
Let’s Not Miss the Moment 🙌
So as you go through this week, I want to challenge you:
- Don’t spend your time wishing for the good ol’ days ⏳.
- Don’t just hope for revival “someday.”
- Lift your eyes 👀. Look around. The field is right in front of you.
Talk to your neighbor about Jesus 🏡.
Leave a gospel tract with your waitress 🍽️.
Ask your friend how they’re really doing spiritually 🗣️.
This isn’t a season to be passive.
It’s a season to be bold, obedient, and engaged.
Now is the time.
Let’s get to work. 🙏🔥
