🙏 I Believe, Help Thou Mine Unbelief

Have you ever walked a trail you thought you knew — only to realize you were in over your head?
I remember hiking the 4th Falls Trail at The Wilds camp. I was huffing and puffing, unsure if I’d make it to the top. The only thing that kept me going was watching my pregnant wife climb out of there like it was no big deal. 😅
Some hikes are familiar. Others are brand new.
But whether we know the trail or not, every step should be taken in faith — and that’s exactly what this story in Mark 9 reminds us.
👀 A Scene of Tension and Failure (vv. 14–19)
Jesus returns from the Mount of Transfiguration to a dramatic scene:
• A large crowd is gathered.
• The scribes are arguing with the disciples.
• A father steps forward with a heartbreaking story.
His son is tormented by a spirit that leaves him mute, throws him into seizures, and even tries to kill him. 😔🔥🌊
The father says, “I brought him to your disciples… but they couldn’t help.”
These were the same disciples who had cast out demons before. Why not now?
Jesus is frustrated:
“O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you?”
The problem wasn’t the demon. It was the disciples’ misplaced confidence.
They had faced this trail before — and thought they could handle it alone.
💔 A Desperate Father, A Powerful Savior (vv. 20–24)
The boy is brought to Jesus, and the spirit immediately acts out — throwing him to the ground in a violent seizure.
Jesus, calm in the chaos, asks the father how long this has been happening.
“Since he was a child,” the father replies. “The spirit tries to kill him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us, and help us.”
And then comes the pivotal exchange:
Jesus: “If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.”
Father: “Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.” 😢
This man had just watched the disciples — the closest followers of Jesus — fail.
If their faith wasn’t enough, what hope did he have?
But in his desperation, he brings the little faith he has to Jesus.
And that was enough.
✋ Power Through Prayer, Not Performance (vv. 25–29)
Jesus speaks to the spirit:
“Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.”
The boy collapses, still and silent. People say, “He is dead.”
But Jesus takes his hand… lifts him up… and he arises. 🙌
Later, the disciples ask privately:
“Why couldn’t we cast him out?”
Jesus replies:
“This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.”
It wasn’t about a lack of knowledge. It wasn’t a faulty formula.
It was a lack of dependence. They had begun to trust in their past experience instead of present faith.
❗“Why could we not cast him out?”
The question reveals the problem: it was never supposed to be about we.
✨ Application: Living by Faith Every Day
We all have areas of life where we’re comfortable:
• We’ve done this before.
• We know the way.
• We’ve had success here.
But comfort can lead to spiritual carelessness.
And carelessness can turn into self-reliance.
God wants us to live by faith not just in the unfamiliar valleys, but on the well-worn trails too.
✅ Are you walking through something brand new and scary?
✅ Or are you facing a familiar challenge and tempted to lean on your own strength?
Either way, your prayer should be the same:
“Lord, I believe — help my unbelief.”
🏁 Final Thoughts
Walking with Jesus isn’t a hike you master — it’s a journey of trust.
Whether you’re trekking through known paths or blazing into unknown terrain…
👣 Walk by faith.
🗣️ Pray like you can’t do it without Him.
🕊️ Believe that He is able — and trust Him to meet you where you’re weak.
