That One Thing You’ve Been Avoiding 😬

You ever have that one task you just keep putting off?

Maybe it’s cleaning out the garage, making a phone call, or finally tackling that messy closet. At first, it seems like a huge deal. You’re not sure how long it’ll take, and honestly—you just don’t feel like doing it. So it sits there. On your list. Staring at you. 👀

Then one day (with absolutely no prompting from your wife, of course 😅), you finally do it. And…it takes 30 minutes.

Why did I wait so long? you wonder. But you already know the truth: you’ll probably do the same thing again next week.

This cycle isn’t just a part of home life—it creeps into our spiritual life too. We know what God wants us to do, but we hesitate. We stall. We procrastinate. And when we finally obey, we find out… it wasn’t so bad after all. In fact, God had already gone before us. 💡

That’s exactly what we see in the story of Barak and Deborah in Judges 4. Let’s walk through it together. 👇

📉 The Cycle Repeats (Judges 4:1–3)

Israel’s story is one of ups and downs—and in Judges 4, they’re definitely on a down. Their leader, Ehud, had passed away, ending the longest period of peace in the entire book: 80 years. But as soon as he’s gone, the people slide right back into doing evil in the sight of the Lord. 😔

God allows them to fall under the rule of a Canaanite king named Jabin. But the real muscle behind the throne was Sisera, the commander of Jabin’s army. For 20 long years, Sisera terrorized Israel with his iron army and 900 chariots. 🛡️🚛

It was dark. It was discouraging. But God had not forgotten His people.

🐝 A Prophetess Under a Palm Tree (Judges 4:4–9)

This is where we meet Deborah—a prophetess, a judge, and one bold woman of God.

Deborah lived and ministered under a tree between Ramah and Bethel, which people started calling “The Palm of Deborah.” (Fun fact: her name means bee in Hebrew 🐝—so this could’ve also been “The Tree of Bees.” 🏕️)

She had such godly wisdom that people came to her for counsel. But she didn’t just wait for visitors—she sent for people too.

One day, she summoned a man named Barak and asked him point blank:

“Hasn’t God already told you to raise an army and confront Sisera? Hasn’t He promised victory if you obey?” (my paraphrase)

Barak had received a clear call from God. But he hadn’t acted on it.

And when Deborah confronted him, his response was… less than heroic.

“I’ll go—but only if you go with me.” (v.8)

👀

It wasn’t exactly a declaration of faith. Maybe Barak wanted Deborah’s spiritual strength nearby. Maybe he thought her reputation would help rally the troops. Whatever the reason, Deborah agreed—but she also let him know that because of his hesitation, he wouldn’t get the glory. The honor would go to a woman. ⚔️

⚔️ From Delay to Deliverance (Judges 4:10–16)

Barak gathered 10,000 men from the tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali. The people responded with courage. 🙌 But meanwhile, a man named Heber betrayed them by alerting Sisera about the gathering forces.

So Sisera assembled all 900 of his chariots and marched to Mount Tabor. The battle was coming. 😨

But Deborah was not shaken.

“Get up! This is the day the Lord is giving Sisera into your hands. Hasn’t He already gone before you?” (v.14)

🔥🔥🔥

With those words, Barak charged down the mountain—and God showed up. The Bible says the Lord “discomfited” Sisera’s army. That’s Bible language for: God wrecked them.

Sisera fled on foot. His story isn’t over yet—we’ll get to that next time. 🏃‍♂️💨

But Barak and his army chased the rest of Sisera’s forces and wiped them out. Not one man was left.

Barak—who started out hesitant and unsure—ended up in total victory.

💭 What About You?

Here’s the heart of this story:

👉 Are you putting off something God has clearly told you to do?

Maybe you feel unqualified. Maybe you’re hoping someone else will step up. Maybe you’re just scared of how big it looks from where you’re standing.

But let me remind you of what we learn from this story:

God had already gone before Barak.

Victory was already promised.

The only thing standing in the way… was hesitation.

You may not have a Deborah calling you out under a tree—but you do have the Holy Spirit nudging your heart. Don’t wait. Don’t delay. Don’t miss out.

📝 Final Thoughts

🎯 Is there a “spiritual project” sitting on your to-do list?

🎯 Are you hoping someone else will do what God told you to do?

🎯 Do you feel like victory is just too far away?

Take courage. Step out in faith. Trust that when God gives you a task, He gives you His presence too.

Stop putting it off. Obey today. 🙏
